Why you need to write an executive thank you letter

You just had an important interview for an executive role, and the interview went well. You decide not to go through the effort of writing a thank you letter as you feel it is ostentatious and not sincere.  This is a big mistake as writing thank you letters after interviewing for an executive role is now considered a normal and expected practice.

Now that you know and understand the importance of writing an executive thank you letter after an interview below, you will learn step by step how to write an executive thank you letter.

Section 1: Date and Info of the person who interviewed you

The first section is to list the date as well as information on the person who interviewed you. This includes the interviewer’s name, title, company, & address.

The example would look like this below:

This part of the letter in a few paragraphs explains why you are thankful for the interview you had and are interested in moving forward and introducing the next part of the letter of why you are suitable for the role. It is also recommended to bold both the hiring manager’s name and the position you applied for.

The example would look like this below:

Chris,

I want to thank you for taking the time to interview me for the SVP position. It was great meeting you and your team and learning more about the role and your organization.

Our meeting has increased my interest in the role, as I am excited to move forward in the capacity that we discussed.  I am a great fit for the position and very enthusiastic about how I will assist you in reaching all your sales goals.

Based on our conversation today, it is certain that my skills and training will allow me to make a great contribution to your organization, specifically, but not limited to these areas:

Section 3: Giving reasons why you are suitable for the role

This section should list 3-4 paragraphs on why you are a fit for the role. These should be specific and quantifiable and should be used as a reminder of your skills.

The example would look like this below:

  • I have over 18 years of experience as a successful C-Suiter leader that has led well-known global firms such as GE, Sony, and Xerox.  My vast experience includes both turnarounds, start-ups, and taking my firms to the next level.
  • An example of my recent success includes taking my current company, TV Logic, from 5% annual growth to over 15% within only 2 years. I also helped increase profit from 50 million to over 150 million annually.
  • My experience in the CPG space is well documented in terms of successes. I turned around a struggling small appliance company Axe Brand. Transforming it from an underproductive company and growing it to one of the most profitable global small appliance brands.

Section 4:  Concluding sentence

This section is designed to thank the interviewer again and let them know you are interested in the next steps.

The example would look like this below:

I look forward to hearing back from you. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions about my background.

Sincerely,

Section 5: Listing your contact information

For this section, you list your contact information, which includes your name, phone number, and email. If you have any credentials that should be listed by your name. Also, it is recommended to bold this information.

The example would look like this below:
